Introduction To S.L.A.M Books

Hello there and thank you for joining us! We are so looking forward to sharing our adventures with you all!

Now a bit about us! We are 4 best friends that have always enjoyed reading. We all lived within driving distance of each other and it was amazing. Then one of us was going to be moving away. We were kind of emotional and then came up with a great idea! Why not start a long distance book club?! We could each chose a book and then send it in “rounds”, that way we all get the chance to read the book! We review it and then mail it to the next person on the list!

Now, where does S.L.A.M comes from? Funny story, it is actually our first initials! We all share this blog and we all share our instagram. It can get a little confusing when there are 4 people sharing an account and so we inital every post so then you can know which one of us wrote the post or comment or blog entry!

We truly enjoy reading and we all have different tastes of books and genres. It is always a treat to have new books to read that I wouldn’t have necessarily chosen. Alot of times, the books that I thought were going to be the most boring (the sun is also a star was one of those books for me. )

One last topic to cover. Why the love of books? Well, I can only speak for myself (i’m A by the way ^_^) but for me books are more than just words on paper. They always have been. A simple quote, a sentence, one thought from a character, it can mean so much to a reader. The author puts their heart and soul into these characters and letting us get to know them. They form these worlds and when we pick up a book, they are inviting us into their world.

You can expect reviews from us, photos, ramblings, and stories about our day to day lives and much, much more in this blog! Please feel free to comment and join our adventure on Instagram as well!

Happy reading !

Quaratine Update with A

Hello there my fellow quarantiners!

How is life? Have you been reading through books like crazy? I totally was at the beginning and then I started getting into a funk almost. It was like the more that I read, the more the days blended together. So naturally I took a break. ANNNNND started crocheting. I’m normally a knitter so it was interesting to start a new challenge. But I am actually enjoying it. Also I’ve been drinking wine. Lots of cheap, delicious, cold wine.

Ok so enough rambling, let’s get onto the topic we usually talk about here. Books.

So if we are counting from February, I’ve read 8 books, which is kind of low for me. I have read some super great books though.

The last time I lied by Riley sager was great! It’s not my favorite by him but it was still a fantastic book! Definitely a suspense, murder mystery type book, as is his forte. *Can I just note how glad I am that he found his niche and he’s sticking to it? I mean I’d probably read other things by him just because he wrote it but I am seriously living for his thrillers.

Little secrets was an ARC that was sent to us and I LOVED it. I gave it a 4.5 rating! It was such a good thriller and it didn’t take the turns that I wasn’t necessarily expecting. It was a serious book but an easy read which was refreshing! I definitely recommend you guys get this one!

Ok now, if you’re in the mood for something a little heavier, Where Sleeping Dogs Lie by Luc Vors. Just, you need to read this. I do have to say that it’s not a light read in the slightest. I seriously felt like freaking Spencer Reid when I was reading. I felt confused like 80% of the time but then when it all tied together? Omg. It was literally the most satisfying and mind blowing ending. This book will take time to read though. But I mean we are quaratining right? I don’t have many things planned. Do you?

Another thing that has been keeping me busy is watching movies and TV. I am currently rewatching Grey’s anatomy. No, I don’t know why I am putting myself through the pain of losing all of my favorite characters again. And yes. I have most definitely been crying in every part just like I did the first time and even some extra parts that I hadn’t cried in before.

Hubby and I have also been watching movies and I’ve been crying there too. We started an avengers marathon and we are still working on it. But let me tell you, disney+? Best investment during this quarantine. I’ve watched Pirates( like 4 times, all of them….), Narnia, Frozen (multiple times), Moana ( also multiple times), Inside out ( ok basically just assume I’ve watched everything multiple times and don’t ask how many) and so many others. I’m going to be able to quote some of these movies word for word in no time!

Anyway! Hope you guys are staying safe! Come chat with us on our Instagram!

IM BACK!!!!

Ok guys. To say that life has been crazy lately would be an understatement. Guess what week it is??? Finals week. Teachers decide to dump everything on you as if you don’t have 5 other classes that you are trying to study for, the nightmares that keep you up at night and force you to shower because you’re having night sweats. (That doesn’t happen to you?? oh….well me neither. It happens to a friend of mine.) But wait a second are you actually gonna be sleeping at all?? Probably not because you’ll be up all night studying.

I didn’t do that bad thankfully. I was pretty behind unfortunately. I tried to catch up on 4 weeks of school all during the 2 weeks of finals. Needless to say I was literally losing my mind.

I got 2 A’s and a B! I am totally a perfectionist as you may or may not know. Regardless. I wish I had gotten an A but I will take it trust me. I was ripping my hair out worried about my accounting test. ( I love accounting don’t get me wrong but I had missed so much and had so much to catch up on that I was worried I would never see the end. Thanks to some pretty awesome teachers and lots of late nights though, I was able to catch up and pass with a B!)

So anyway, while dealing with all of this, I am still recovering from a little incident that happened a couple of months ago. It has me laid up and like an 80 year old woman.

I can’t say much more on the subject but anyway back to my TBR. As of right now I am reading A drop of night by Stefan Bachmann. So far, I have to say it is different and very unique. I definitely haven’t read a book like this before and I am looking forward to seeing the ending and how this story develops.

I also just finished a series that I had read before! Archetype and Prototype by M.D Waters. It’s a good science fiction, action, psychological thriller. It was fantastic! The twists and turns that this book took me on was insane! I’ll write a more in depth review soon, don’t worry but I’d recommend this to you guys FOR SURE!

Anyway BYE peoples! I will talk to you soon!

Updates

Well hello there boys and girls! I’ve been MIA for a little bit but let me tell you, I missed you guys! I was in a bit of an accident and I’m at home now recovering. I’m using this time to catch up on blog posts, reading, and the book reviews for books that I’ve already finished. (Can we also just talk about the weather? Where did fall go? I’m still trying to find it! )

So some of the book reviews that you can already read on goodreads and that will be coming up on instagram and the blog are:

  • Final Girls by Riley Sager
  • Lock Every Door by Riley Sager
  • Play Dead (DI Kim Stone) by Angela Marsons
  • You have to believe me by Sunday Tomassetti
  • Bring Me Back by B.A Paris
  • The roses of May by Dot Hutchison
  • The Butterfly Garden by Dot Hutchison

These are only the ones that I have read and put reviews up for! This doesn’t even include the books that the other girls have read.

Another update is about the arcs we’ve gotten! We received

  • You have to believe me by Sunday Tomassetti
  • Where sleeping dogs lie by Luc Vors

Now, school. Since I’ve been out for a couple of days, I am so behind on school work. Ugh it can be so overwhelming at times. I do love my accounting class but I am not looking forward to having to teach myself everything that I missed. Its literally a whole chapter but it is what it is. Anyway, I will keep working on the blog and everything else to get you guys our reviews! Super glad to be back with all of you guys!

Intro to S

Hello world! This is S! First letter in slam but with the others we’d just be slm, Sam, or Sla, or without the S they would just be a lam. But I mean lambs are cool too… Okay enough of the bad humor, I love books! I love being transported into other worlds and I love having such close friends to share the all of the goodreads with! Okay that was the last pun I promise 😉

I learned to read at a very young age, and it took me a little bit to really get into chapter books but once I did I was hooked! One of the first books I remember reading is “Journey to the Center of the Earth”, along with Nancy Drew books. One that I will always remember loving is Little Women. And of course there’s “Anne of Green Gables” and all of Jane Austen’s novels.

My first YA series that i will always love is Ally Carter’s Gallagher Girls Series, the first book is “I’d Tell You I Love You but then I’d have to Kill You”. I’ll never forget the day I saw it in Barnes and Noble, coming down the escalator and seeing the plaid cover with the school girl on the cover, and then seeing the title and thinking, I need to buy this. Well i’m pretty sure my grandma bought it for me. Thanks grandma! I grew up reading each book as they came and it felt like I grew up with those characters! I loved the first book so much I shared it with as many friends as I could and had them all sign the inside cover so I could remember!

A little bit about me! I work at Starbucks and I am learning Mandarin Chinese which I absolutely love! I love all things Disney and besides books I have a passion for Film, all things movies, directing, screenwriting and even recently got some books that I hope to study soon! Some of my Top favorite movies are pretty much by Director Christopher Nolan, Interstellar and Inception etc. and also classics like Jurassic Park and Singing in the Rain. I really hope to start a Movie review blog someday 🙂

How I met the Slamgirls:

I met A while working on a volunteer project in upstate New York, and we’ve been best friends ever since! L and I have lived near each other for a long time became a lot closer in the last few years! And i’m so happy we have! And M was introduced to me through A and all of these girls are truly the sisters I didn’t even know I wanted! And I don’t know what I would do without them.

This is my Dog Sasha, she’s a pure bred sheltie and you may occasionally see her in my pics because she doesnt like being ignored when i’m reading lol.

I like many different book genres, YA fiction, science fiction, some fantasy, historical fiction, mystery and suspense, and recently starting to get into adult fiction as well.

Some of my favorite books are The Little Prince, The Fault in our Stars, The Apple Tart of Hope, Skyward and The Hunger Games Trilogy.

Changes, Changes, and more Changes

So for me personally, this past year has brought about alot of changes for me. My husband and I moved in March to Sioux Falls, SD from Peoria, Illinois. It was a big change but it was an exciting one. I personally have lived in Philadelphia, Wisconsin, Illinois, and now South Dakota but this was the first big move for my husband (the first time he ever had moved was when he moved into our apartment in Peoria.) We love it so far!But we have yet to have a winter here yet.

Then as I mentioned before we got our little Nala Bug! She has only been with us since about June but boy do we love her. She actually has learned to “sit”, “stay”, “lay”, and “give me your paw.” The other thing we have recently learned thanks to a good friend, she loves laser pointers! It keeps her so busy and we don’t have to run around the house with her.

Now for the newest development…I am back in school! I’m going for bookkeeping at the moment. If I’m being honest, I am enjoying it now but I was incredibly nervous when I first started. I haven’t been to school since 2014 and I’m telling you, I felt like a kindergartner who had been held back 8x (because most of the people in my classes are a bit younger than me) but it’s still my first day of class. Thankfully this is feeding my OCD! I get to have lots of pens and highlighters and notebooks 😀

I have to be honest though. The accounting class that I’m taking is rough to say the least. Have you ever had a college teacher tell you, after you ask her to slow down, that this is college and that you need to deal with it? Well. Neither have I but she said it to another student and my friends. I WAS SHOOK. Idk. I feel like as a teacher you should try to adapt your style of teaching as much as possible to your students. I get accounting and I still struggle at times trying to keep up. Lets not even get me started on the tests. How am I supposed to know the answer to a question that you have never gone over? Especially when you are constantly telling us that you want us to learn the process and the accounts and that nothing else really matters but then you test us on terminology and not the process or the accounts…..like seriously. Anyway I’m done with my rant. *Bows* I hope you enjoyed! See ya later slammers! ❤

Little Voices Review!!

Alright ladies and gentleman, here’s our first review for our blog and let me say this was a great book!

We received this book from Ms Vanessa and her publisher in exchange for an honest review. I am so grateful for this book. It’s definitely one that I am going to remember for a good while. I’ll stop ranting and show you the review.

In short. I really enjoyed this book but I want you to be aware that I tend to type alot for my reviews.

“Ok this book was probably one of the most unique books that I’ve ever read. I really enjoyed the fact that it had such an unreliable narrator but still such a strong story line.
Devon, a lawyer in a prestigious Rhode Island town, had a very traumatic delivery right at the beginning of the book and while shes dealing with this crazy stressful situation already she hears that her friend, Belina, was murdered. A friend that she had just seen that day. Devon becomes borderline obsessed with finding out what really happened to her, especially when one of her other friends in the town is accused of the murder. He claims innocence the entire time and Devon is set on finding the truth. She tries to refrain from turning back to her past habits, solve a mystery that the cops swear they have the answer to, all while being newly post-partum and having a little one to take care of. Then there’s the voice. Devon has this voice that talks to her and basically makes her second guess everything and makes her feel belittled. I’d say that it’s similar to the little devil on your shoulder. I have to say, although sometimes it did get slightly annoying, it added a different dimension to the story and it all makes sense in the end. The things that come out in this story are shocking to say the least. From secrets that people have tried to keep hidden, affairs, lies, and deceit are just about everywhere in this book. GUYS THE ENDING THOUGH!!!! It was not what I was expecting at all. I mean twisted times 10!! I totally recommend this book!

As always our reviews are on goodreads as well! Thanks for reading this far 🙂

Intro to A

Hey there 🙂 I’m A 🍸! One of the 4 S.L.A.M girls! I’ve been reading pretty much since I was a kid. One of the first book series my mom got me was the Dr Seuss books and they were my favorite! I was obsessed. Then by 1st grade I had read all the magic tree house books (yet another favorite). 3rd grade was all about Nancy Drew and mysteries (the hardy boys namely. I swore that I was gonna marry one of them. Which i mean i guess my husband kinda looks like them.)

Most kids would get grounded and get their tv or phones taken away. I got my books and library card taken away (dont worry, I had a secret stash underneath the wood slabs of my bed *sorry mom!*)

I have an obsession with puppies as you can see! I love this guy but he isnt mine!

So my husband and I got married Oct 14, 2017. Funny enough we were introduced by our fellow S.L.A.M girls S🌹, and my husband grew up with M❄ and L 💋 well from the day we met we all clicked 🙂 He already knows not to ask questions about our crazy ideas and just let’s us be. He sometimes joins in with a book or two himself. (He loved the Alex Rider series, Hardy boys *see previous paragraph*) His favorite thing growing up though (and even still now) are movies. So between books and movies our house has just about anything you would need! Did I mention we like whiskey?

So to introduce the last member of our crazy little family you need some back story (you really don’t but I’m in a rambling mood). Soooo I have been asking for a puppy for the last 2 years. Actually since before we got married (I had a puppy at home, Norm, but my mom said while I could leave the house, I would be removing MY dog over her dead body. Needless to say. Mom won)

This is Norman “Norm” (he only gets called Norman when he is in trouble). Hes also known as stormy normy, normagedon, the fool that runs into walls, and fluffy butt. I loved growing up with this little turd and I knew that I was gonna need my own.

So we looked for forever (hubby wasn’t always on board but I still searched anyway). Then when I was visiting my mom we decided. Hey. Let’s go to the shelter. I look to my left and there she was….

My little Nala Bug ^_^

Sooooo I went to Wisconsin alone and came back with a puppy to South Dakota. Shes a special pup. Sometimes obnoxious because she wants to be all over you. Sometimes a stinker when she pees right next to the potty pad. Slightly retarded when she runs into screen doors. Crazy about a teddy bear that she attacks regularly. But let me tell you, shes the perfect addition to our family. She loves movies, walks, dog parks and people. Especially her bestie Ryver. We couldnt be happier to have this little bug in our lives. Anyway, that’s enough of me! Stay tuned for the next intro!
